Stigma For Stay At Home Dads
Stay at home dad’s have doubled in recent years due to probably a combination of the “he”cession that experts are claiming is going on, along with Dad’s stepping up more and becoming more active participants in the roles of parenting. So what are the effects?
It would be that they are also having to explain the gaps in their resume and how or why they took two years off to stay at home with Tom or Suzie. Try to go out and network in a room full of your peers and when the question comes to you for what you do for a living, you say, oh, I stay at home with the kids.
That concept until now has been foreign to men. Rather than seeing the positive attributes that an individual must possess in order to make the necessary sacrifices to stay at home with their children and make them a priority, it seems you are supposed to hide in some type of diaper duty shame and hope that no one sees you. Why isn’t parenting viewed as a necessary position that deserves as much respect as your last position as a doctor, teacher or photographer? Weren’t you all three of those while you were “just at home” with your kid?
