Should Drug Addicts Be Sterilized?

Posted by Laurel on June 5th, 2010

Sterilization is obviously a touchy subject, however it’s a hot topic worth debating. One lady by the name of Barbara Harris has actually started a program called Project Prevention that aims sterilization towards drug addicts and gives them a $300 incentive to sterilize or use long-term birth control. While I think that each of us have opinions on who and who should not have children, this definitely puts drug addicts in a box by themselves. If this program is successful (not sure how that would be determined?), then will it stop with drug addicts? How is the eligibility for this program determined? If you have entered a rehabilitation center, can’t keep a job or stable residence? Where is age factored into all of this? What about men? This program seems to be aimed strictly at women. Aren’t there men who are drug addicts that have sex with women who are not?

There are instances where this type of program could be seen as successful for some women, I’m sure. But there are people who have battled addiction in their lives that do recover and go on to live normal lives which includes having children. There just seem to be too many factors to come up with a once size fits all solution. It’s definitely an interesting concept, but who knows what other groups may be targeted next? I’m still interested with figuring out who came up with the $300 amount. I guess if you give up your right to have children for that amount, your probably don’t need to have any.
