Family Sends Adopted Son Back
So family adopts child from Russia and is promised a “healthy” child with no problems other than flat feet and stubborness. Family ends up disappointed and fearful for their safety after the child exhibits aggression and plays with fire in bedroom. Family then decides to put kid on a plane to travel the world with an attached note.
This story brings up all kinds of questions. I remember doing a post a long time ago on people who were dropping their children (in particularly their teens) off at hospitals and trying to use the safe haven law as protection. This obviously is a little different though being that these parent’s actually would seem to have more resources and have been put under a little more scrutiny than just anyone who just chose to have a child.
I’m ignorant when it comes to adoption, but wonder why people from the U.S. adopt outside of the U.S. when it would seem that we have plenty of children that need homes here already? I don’t know if it’s cheaper, if the guidelines are less stringent or what, but I would think that adopting an American child would make more sense just for adaptation purposes alone (especially when it comes to older children). I get that celebrities travel the world and are touch by the children they see suffering in other countries, however that doesn’t mean that there aren’t children who are here already that don’t need to be adopted.
Obviously there are some other concerns with this situation as well like the system that obviously not only failed the child, but the family that adopted it. Even if the people who held the adoption were led to believe that this child didn’t have any physical or mental conditions, why were the parent’s not required to be prepared for them if he did? I keep hearing the media say, this is a child not a product that didn’t work right so you take it back to the store. But it seems to be to be about the same type of transaction?
This is one of those unfortunate situations that no matter what is put into place, no one is going to come out on top. It’s easy for Dr. Phil to say that this child is now one families responsibility and they should just get help and deal with it, but obviously the family that adopted him didn’t understand that concept or know how to. Ultimately, shouldn’t it be the responsibility of the agency in charge to make sure that the family would be equipped before they adopted him out? I think Russia should put a halt on anymore adoptions until they have more answers to where the system failed.
Do I agree with the decision to put this kid on a plane by himself etc., no. But is it worse than him being abused or buried in a backyard somewhere. That’s often the result when parent’s become overwhelmed and have lack of resources or options. So while I don’t think that children are refundable, not everyone has Dr. Phil’s team, time or money and it appears that the adoption process itself was terribly flawed.

hope he can find happiness with his real parent
