Personal Note & The Economy

Posted by Laurel on October 15th, 2009

Sometimes you’ve got to take a breather from the parenting aspects of life and reflect on you, so that is what this post is. Of course there are always details of children even in that, right?! There have been some life changes that have came my way over the last couple months which included me being affected by the economy like so many others.

I’m laid off right now and in the midst of job searching, pursuing personal projects and considering going back to school. I am technically a single parent, so I will hopefully be eligible for some financial aid, and it’s not all bad. I have to secretly admit that it gets sort of annoying when people start telling you they are “sorry” that you got laid off. Why is there such a stigma around being out of “work” or the 9-5 rat race?

Hmmmm…anyway, I’m actually pretty excited about maybe going back to school and either adding to my original degree in graphics or maybe going into something totally new. Change can be a good thing, although of course it leaves you jumping into the great big abyss of the unknown, like it or not!

Having some free time really helps out with the fall sickies with the kids, doctors appointments and tying together lose ends that can never seem to get done while working 40 hours and week and caring for kids. Even with “not working” you can find yourself pretty busy and if you keep the kids with you at home, you get little to nothing done. I’m amazed at those people that can seem to. The days fly by like lightening!

Okay, back to the drawing board for me, and feel free to share any of your stories concerning how the economy has affected you?
