Nurse Ins For Breastfeeding Moms

Posted by Laurel on July 29th, 2009
Until recently I was unaware of what a “nurse-in” was. Apparently it is basically a protest by a group of people (presumably women) who pro-test the rules of breastfeeding in particular place. I suppose different places have their own set of rules. At this pool in Oregon, they decided that breastfeeding would be equivalent to their food and drink rule and sent a woman into the locker room to breast feed…I mean really, is that the best they could come up with?
I personally did not breastfeed, so I’m not as educated on the issue as some mother’s may be. However, I do feel that our phobia around it in this country is quite rediculous. I mean we can have overtly sexual content on our televisions and coming from the media, but as soon as a woman pops out a boob to feed her child we want to scream and shun her. Is it that this is still a man’s world, they are still making the rules and the men want the boobs for themselves only? Shouldn’t their be some type of “right to be fed” law?
I can understand if a woman totally exposes herself to the general public and walks around with her boobs hanging out (not that it doesn’t happen all the time), but if the baby’s feeding, there’s not much left to see. Shouldn’t all public establishments have a general concensus on this subject so women and mother’s don’t have to defend their right to feed their children?
