Disney’s First Black Princess, With A Twist Of White
That just came to me, don’t ask me where from, lol!
I never have cared much for Disney and the princess theme. I never cared for dressing up or wearing a tiara. I looked nothing like a princess nor cared to immulate one. I was the flip flops and pants girl with a mouth that would scare any prince off regardless of how long my hair was. But after having a daughter who is intriged by the notion, I understand that Disney has an audience.
Now that I think of it, Brielle has a comforter with castle’s and a princess on it. The princess is white with blonde hair. Since Brielle has multiple origins that reflect a darker tone (best way I can say it without putting complicated labels on her), I do wonder why her dad bought that comforter? Not to say that I don’t want her to have a diverse population of dolls and images to look at, but it would be nice if her bedding was a little more authenticly her.
Having said all of that, Disney is finally coming out with it’s first black princess. I’m in awe of facts like this & that I’m living in a time where firsts like this are occurring…progress really is slow.
Like any other new concept or idea, it isn’t escaping controversy. While most people obviously support the idea of finally having a black princess, they didn’t seem quite ready for the prince to be white. Is there a racist undertone with not creating a prince with a darker complexion?
Who knows? My conclusion is that there is probably a more likely theory of trying to appeal to a wider audience and the movie not being typecast as a “black disney” movie. Whether this is right or wrong, I don’t know either, but this is indeed where hollywood is right now.
I listened to an interview with the biggest actor of all time, Will Smith who when asked about his experience in hollywood, he talked about not really having any negative experiences due to his skin color. However, he did mention the fact that he had never had a black female co-star in any of his movies. So if it isn’t happening in that realm, then what makes us think it’s going to happen in fairy tale la la land?
The fact of the matter is, hollywood represents pop culture, mainstream at it’s best…where boats are never rocked and it’s all about what is going to bring in the most green. Anyone heard of a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down?
If people want more honest and authentically reflective pictures, images and objects out there, then they are going to have to put them out there themselves…independent films anyone? Most people who are aware of lack of diversity in the world, also know the reason why. Women and minorities have to own these types of companies and play the pivotal roles that make the movies if they want to make the decisions about what is put out into the world.
Until then, we will just have to put up with an inter-racial fairytale couple, which of course needs to be represented as much as any other if you ask me.

When I first read that, it made sense to me and I moved on. Then I thought about it.
Why is appealing to a wider audience only a consideration when certain aspects are involved?
Did they have this issue when they made Mulan?
What about?
-The Little Mermaid
-Aladdin
-Beauty and The Beast
I’m not even including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella due to the time they were made.
It’s just an interesting point. I don’t have a side on the issue, but I do think that the Prince is kind of cute.
