Can I Get Brown Eyes With That Order?

Posted by Laurel on March 25th, 2009

Yep, I knew it was only a matter of time. I happen to be one of those people who loves to predict what’s going to be going on in the future and this is one of those things that I knew was coming. The cloning stuff that’s way out there and possibly will never be available at a store near you. However, picking the gender of your child, along with eye and hair color seems to be a very appealing offer. I’m not sure what clinic or where it was at, but according to a radio talk show I happened to scan by, they are making this latest new reproduction feature available to the public. So the question of the day is, if you had the funds, would you use them for this?

I lucked out. I was blessed with 3 beautiful children. And I’m not just saying that ;) you can check out their pic under the “about” link. When I go out, people always comment on what a great looking set of kids I have. My daughter could be one of those child models if I pushed for it, my sons probably as well. That’s a whole other parenting topic that I will possibly touch on one day.

But what if I wasn’t an attractive person on society’s scale, nor my partner? What if even then, I didn’t care for our eye color or want to take chances of a “less than adorable” child popping out?

I would say the two biggest protests would be the moral factor (we are trying to “play God”) and the shallow factor. Some people already make a very conscious decision to mate with an attractive person in order to work the odds in their favor of having an attractive child, is that playing God? The shallow factor is an obvious one, but if and when this option is available to any and everyone, there are going to be alot of people signing up regardless. Anything done to alter appearance at all can be made to be shallow, we do live in America!

I believe that people will always be judged by others on some scale, and one of the largest is attractiveness. Later comes the bank account and then the smarts. We can deny these simple facts all we want, but in my opinion “it is what it is”. The same people that put in energy to help give their children financial and educational backing, would be perfect candidates. I mean look at we who buy our children braces, high dollar clothes and toys. Our whole world is built around image. Since we have such an issue with self-acceptance, why not shield Sally from the heartache and pain of plastic surgery when she wakes up one day and doesn’t care for her nose or the shape of her chin?

As for myself, even though I don’t really see anything hugely wrong with this concept or too different from plastic surgery (besides possibly being safer), it is one of those what if questions I fortunately will not ever have to answer. My children might someday though, possibly leaving my grandchildren’s appearance to science. Even if I was okay with it, what a freaky thought?!

I do not think we should go with re production. naturalism is the gift given by god to us and we should not make even single change in it.
