Economommies - Side Effects the Economy and Parenting
Everyone seems to be tired of hearing about it (myself included), but the state of the economy seems to be a hot topic these days for some reason?
So I was wondering how the suffering economy is affecting parents and therefore the kids? Today I read a story that hit the spot about a new population of parents called the “economommies”. While I think the term is a little ridiculous and discredits any stay at home dads, it gives attention to many women who are finding that staying at home with their children is no longer an option.
I was a little surprised that 82% of the people being laid off are men. But with that statistic, I’m sure that puts alot of families at risk that were surviving off of one income. It sort of puts a spin on the sahm versus working mom into perspective I would think. It’s just one example of how fragile that situation is.
There are many women who find themselves in a position to be able to stay at home, not necessarily planning on it - who packed their education and career away behind the strollers in the garage. What about the women who are pregnant or have just had a baby, wow what an obstacle. I’m sure it would be quite fun explaining why you can’t see your feet, right along with why you haven’t worked in 5 years.
I’m sure there are other changes that parents are either making or considering that definitely affect their children with the economy. Unfortunately sports and extra-curriculars may get the cut along with family vacations etc. I know they are experiencing changes in school as well with programs being cut.
I guess it’s a good time to talk to them about what’s going on and listen to any ideas or concerns they may have with the world. While I think it’s important not to worry children, I do think we shouldn’t have our children living in a bubble where they don’t believe they will ever face similar struggles as adults or see how the world works as a whole. There are some definite lessons we can all learn with what’s going on right now.
