Girl Auctions Off Virginity

Posted by Laurel on September 17th, 2008

Every week I get various ideas for these parenting posts. Whether they come from my own parenting experiences, a simple idea that pops in my head around parenting or parent related news stories that stick out in my head, I try to pick one to write about that is interesting and makes us as parents think about this job huge job we have a hand in.

This week, I keep coming back to the news story of the girl who put her virginity up for sell on the internet. While she obviously is technically an adult and too old for her parents to not have any real say in the matter (unless she still lives at home), I still have to put myself in the place of her parents and ask myself the “what would I do if” question. If my child came up with this creative notion, I’m sure I would be stopped in my tracks for a moment.

Most parents would be outraged, mortified and planning their own funeral after only a few moments of the breaking news. I’d like to think I’m different from a lot of parents out there, and even though my knee jerk reaction would be to bend her over my knee, I believe I could handle it with an open mind. I’m sure in every parent’s life, whether there is such an extreme case of perplexity or not, there are other experiences in your life as a parent that you aren’t expecting or prepared for.

While most parents who raise a child with a traditional “moral” upbringing usually don’t have to worry about these types of announcements, sometimes it’s those exact types of families that do. The children that feel so restricted in life to always do what they are told and live their lives in the “proper” way going from A-Z, somehow break the mold when they break free. Either they break free at some point, or they suffer from depression and sadness feeling like they followed more footsteps than creating their own.

While I’m not wishing for the day that any of my children put their virginity up for sale, I do have the hopes that they will be free thinkers who don’t allow society to dictate their own personal choices, lives or pass harsh judgment on others. And while there are possibly better ways for virgins to lose their virginity, there are also definitely worse.

I’m sure there will still be the teens that lose it in the back seat of the car, but to those who like a little more control and to be able to pay for their own college tuition, looks like there’s going to be new options for the cyber savvy teen!
