Delivering Miracles at Home

Posted by Dannie on June 27th, 2008

The birth of your child is the most exhilarating experience any parent can have. Feelings of excitement, fear, love, and relief all rolled into one. It will become the most special day in your life; always remembered, and yes, that includes the pain.

During your pregnancy, you will have many decisions to make from choosing your baby’s name, decorating the nursery, and even the decision on how you would like to deliver your baby. At home or at the hospital delivery.

From a parent that has delivered both of my children within a medical facility, I can say that I have always been interested in the home birth process. Interested, but chose to have neither child at home. This was mainly due to comfort level and the lack of information available during my pregnancies.

Today, there still is limited information available on home birth. There just happens to be one particular piece of information, a documentary, “The Business of Being Born“, that will explain the process of home birth and will help to possibly alleviate fears you may have. The great stance within this documentary is choice.

There is a choice when giving birth. A hospital or clinic delivery is not the only route you have to go. Home birth is safe, caring, and a loving experience for both mother and child. Home birth can also result in a more emotional reaction from mother since little to no drug interaction will be involved.

The Business of Being Born truly reviews various factors, including the high cost of maternity and delivery care within a hospital, critical factors that c-sections are used more than just when medically necessary, and also touches on the emotional difference between the two types of delivery.

So what is the big business of being born? Hospitals want turnover. This turnover is where the money is made. The faster a delivery can be processed, the sooner one mother will be out and the sooner the bed will be filled again.

Be prepared! Graphic scenes of home births will enlighten you on the warm and loving experience when child is first given to mother. This touching moment is rarely ever given to a mother of c-section, as she usually will not see her newborn until she has gone through some recovery period.

The Business of Being Born” is brought to you by Executive Producer Rikki Lake. Lake, an advocate for home birth, gives you a view into her own path to home deliver with her second son.

Yes, the documentary does focus on home delivery, but it offers views - gives you the opportunity to make a choice. You will be able to make an informed decision to choose how your baby will be delivered and not feel there is only one option with no alternatives.

I agree that we aren’t as aware of our options concerning child birth as we could be. When the bottom line is money then yes, hospitals can be be uncaring. For me I know that safety and pain management were my two main concerns. Plus both of my births were induced. I know I wasn’t as educated as I could have been - alot of that was due to simple life distractions I suppose :) The documentary looks very interesting.

I was really surprised by the documentary. It really opens you up to the possibility of home delivery. I chose the hospital only out of 1) comfort level, and two) no knowledge. This should really help people be able to make a choice.

This is a great topic because I believe it’s all about education.

I’m no homebirth guru, but ever since I watched the documentary I’ve done a lot of research and to me it seems that one would be more safe birthing outside of a hospital. That’s hard to grasp because I think a lot of women imagine a midwife coming to their house with a towel and hot water. They don’t understand that they are trained and have tools.

Also as for the pain, I’ve heard there are ways to manage the pain without an epidural. I find the hypnobabies concept to be quite interesting.

But it all comes down to research and as long as women have the choice to do what’s best for them, that’s all that counts.

The more information the better.
When you are pregnant there is so-o much information given to you about life with your baby, but not as much about the actual birth experience.

I chose to give birth in a hospital. That was for my comfort level, and I researched the hospitals as well. My cousin chose home births. Both of us had wonderful experiences.

This documentary brings home birth to light in a beautiful way. I believe it will help new mothers find a path that they might not otherwise have chosen.

Here’s a LA Times OP Ed about the issue.

“Women are simply caught in a turf war over the maternity market, and it would appear that the physicians’ groups are perfectly willing to trample the modern medical ethic of patient autonomy — grounded in our legal rights to self-determination, to liberty and to privacy — in their grab for control.”
