Let’s Wake Up About Teen Pregnancy
I’m all for a society that doesn’t shame, exclude, or ridicule people for making choices. However there is a fine line between good choices and poor ones. It seems we went from sending young girls away in exile for slipping up; to providing free high school on-site daycare. Shouldn’t there be one on my work site first?!
Let’s face it, in some families young people have little to do other than have sex, drink ,and fuel their boredom with some less desirable life choices. I don’t see anything wrong with drinking or having sex, but when you are too young to know what you are doing, and lack the sense to be responsible, then those choices can alter and affect your life for the remainder of a lifetime.
Recently there was a story where 17 teen girls that were no older than 16 decided instead of making a pact to go to the beach together for graduation, they’d go ahead and get pregnant together. Where do these great conversations come from? Right after that big math test, we’ll pick out baby names? I guess so.
So what’s to blame? Lack of education, love, purpose, focus and direction? Sometimes just the forgotten nightly pill?
The same answers to teen pregnancy are true for many of society’s ails. Part of it is understanding and waking up to the true consequences of life altering choices; and the rest of it is working towards ways to avoid them. But as long as there are parents/family and a society that support and sometimes glamorize these choices financially and otherwise, then we will begin to see more and more of the same choices made.
For me, having a baby and living at home wasn’t an option, just like not going to college wasn’t an option either. Having options is a good thing when it comes to something like maybe…banking, but when it comes to having babies, that should be a little different. There are many points in our lives when we simply don’t have brains and hopefully need others to be within reach.
