Moving With Kids Can Be Painful

Posted by Laurel on April 30th, 2008

Moving can be a pain with or without kids, but kids add a whole new element to moving. Whether your children are young or school age, each age has its own challenge. For the younger children, the difficult part is getting them used to their new surroundings. When I moved with my twins, one of them ventured through the door and up the steps to check out the new territory. The other clung to my leg for dear life. There was crying and there were many nights of reassurance until they finally had stomped around the same floors enough to call them home.

With the oldest, the biggest thing is the school change or leaving behind neighborhood friends. So when I told him he’d have to change schools, I knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. He hated me for a few days, but he’s readjusted as well. Sometimes you just don’t have much of a choice in life. If you just replant at every whim, then that’s one thing. But like everything else in life, there are pros and cons. The pros being that you become flexible and know you won’t die if you leave home or the city you grow up in. Then of course there are the cons like losing touch with old friends and relationship.

One way that the burden of moving can be eased is with moving announcements. I never have thought of them when moving, but you know your friends and family want to have your address, so you might as well give it to them in a cute way.

Tiny Prints has a nice selection, and now that I’ve browsed around I see that can use them for more than just the traditional move. Move + New Baby? Forget sending out two announcement just send out this cute one that says “Follow Me To Our New Crib”.

There’s also photo announcements and you know how families love to have updated pics. You could even use a pic of your new place if you know friends and family won’t get to see it for awhile.

Don’t forget about the kids! Maybe giving the oldest a few to send out to his long lost friends they will never see again would be a good idea to ease their pain a little…and your guilt.
