I Don’t Work

Posted by Allena Tapia on January 21st, 2008

Grr. I just told the Verizon guy that “I don’t work.” My whole family is right now saying “whaaaa?” because I do work. In fact, I work my butt off.

In all fairness, he was asking where I worked because he was checking to see if I qualified for discounts, so I just figured it was easier than explaining things.

I have found that I get in a long conversation when I tell people that I’m a freelance writer. So many people have writing aspirations, and they all like to tell me about their half-finished novel. (Got my own, thanks) Either that, or they’re all excited about working at home. It’s not all that.

Sometimes you even get the people who actually believe that people who work from home aren’t really working. Work From Home Momma has a few examples of that.

By the way, while we are on the topic of working from home, be sure to drop by Telecommuting Diva who tells it like it is about running a home based business.

Relax!

I’ve done exactly the same thing. Sometimes it’s just easier than explaining that you own a business that you run out of your house.

Somehow, one of the first questions people ask is not “What do you do?” But, “Where do you work?”

For me, the answer to the first question is “I’m a freelance writer.” The answer to the second question is “in my breakfast nook.”

Well, if I get asked the second questions first, you can see how it can get.

;-)

Thanks for the link.

Oh boy can I relate! I read those comments left on that post you linked to, and still find it amazing how many people down-play the WORK involved with being a stay-at-home mom or dad. So they’re all sitting around eating Bon-Bon’s eh? Ridiculous!

Have you ever checked out the Mom’s Salary Wizard? Quite interesting to say the least. It provides an estimate of what a stay-at-home mom’s salary would be IF they got paid to do it.

What about the Job Description of a Mother? Pretty funny and oh so true.

Oh how I hate when people think that just because you work at home you aren’t working. My own mother is one of them always telling me “why don’t you just get a REAL job” LOL it makes me want to absolutely scream my head off!
