Aqua Dots Recall…What’s Going on In China?

Posted by Allena Tapia on November 10th, 2007

Diva Jr. really wanted Aqua Dots. I really wanted to get her Aqua Dots. I mean, they’re kinda cool, in a psychedelic way.

If you’re watching too much Nickelodeon home often like I am, you may have seen the super cool commercial with these weird little “plastic” dots that magically freeze to one another when you spray them with water. You can take a look at them (for now anyway) at As Seen On TV.

Well, luckily we’re kinda cheap, and decided to wait for Christmas before any new toys come in the house, because, turns out that Aqua Dots have traces of GHB- the “date rape drug” in them!

Now, Diva and Beast are both past the age of ingesting their toys, but I could have seen some issues with Jack Sparrow, the Shih Tzu who eats everything.

I really don’t think that kids who are still likely to ingest their toys should have ANY small bead-like toy available to them. But, the fact is, China cheated anyway— the GHB-related chemical isn’t even cited in the manufacturers materials list!

Here’s my diva tangent on China: Since all these recalls began, people have acted all surprised about the whole China issue.

Why? Why should we expect a nation that isn’t even concerned about it’s own citizen’s human rights to give a second thought to the health and safety of our dogs and kids halfway around the world? Kinda expecting a little too much there, folks.

So, will you be buying products from China for the great holiday spend off? I’m not so sure. But I do know the next As Seen On TV product I’ll be checking out: Moon Sand. That stuff looks cool.

Moon Sand is pretty disappointing. It doesn’t work well and is incredibly messy. The kids were so frustrated with it that we ended up tossing it out after the first time they played with it. All I have to show for it is the two big scratches in the table where sand got loose and scratched up the tabletop.

[...] So, would I leave my kids alone in a room with the Old School Sesame Street? Eh, only if they are simultaneously playing with a tub of Aqua Dots. [...]
