Am I Being Too Hard on New Mommies?
My last two posts dealt with new mommies, to a point. I started thinking that I’m getting old (translated as too far away from when my own kiddos were born) and started feeling a little sorry for my lack of understanding toward the newbies out there.
Well…I started to anyway. But then I read this MSNBC story about the weirdly competitive edge that new mommies can get. They can worry about the silliest things. The story talks about how moms may constantly undercut one another in things such as “little johnny walked at 9 months” and “little May read at age 4″ etc etc.
See, once you’re past baby number one, these things cease to matter. In fact, if you started bragging to me about how great your kids are, I’d be likely to try to rope you into babysitting mine for a couple hours. So, spare me. Besides, my kids understand two languages and are world travelers. (Oops sorry ’bout that. )
The article speculates that this is because of the great identity shift that new mothers have to deal with. I don’t have any great advice for this identity shift, but I have always tried to keep in mind something I heard on Dr. Phil: you absorb the baby into your life- it doesn’t become your life. Maybe that will help with identity problems. If not, hang in there, or have another one:)
