Thanks for the clickthrough! I think Hang Glider parent doesn't sound so bad. DJ- I tell my kids what to do all the time. They don't listen much, and as they've grown I've learned to temper it a bit and tailor it to their unique personalities.

I call myself a Hang Glider Parent. It's cheating, but I'll just quote myself... Ugh, right?

"I don't so much hover as I do sort of glance around the situation, get the general gist of things, but then continue on whatever path the air current has me going at the time. If need be, I'll swing back around and take a closer look, but if I stop, chances are I won't be able to get started again, so I'm better off letting things work themselves out on their own if I can help it."

Clicked through BlogHer to you because I was sure this had to be a take on Helicopter Parents. Glad I did.

I don't know how we got into this discussion, but I told you before that I talk about my non-existent kids. Anyway my husband and I were talking and he was implying that I would be a bit controlling. He said "you can't tell your kids what to do. You can tell them right from wrong but you can't tell them what to do." My response was "Why not?" I don't see myself hovering and writing essays and such...but I do hope to have a strong influence on them.
