I got words on my butt!

Am I in the 1950s?

Posted by Allena Tapia on October 4th, 2007

Who waches Mad Men on AMC? It’s actually pretty decent, set in the 1950s, great drama.

Apparently some of us are still living there.

That Other Adult in the House, my husband, is the Treasurer for the PTA. It was an easy commitment, as he “accounts” stuff for a living. One of his duties is to run the holiday shop- you know that cute little area where the kids come and buy assorted junk gifts for their loved ones for the holidays?

Well, yesterday, during his lunch hour, he attends the Holiday Junk Company’s little orientation at a local hotel. He shows up into a room full of…you guessed it…Mommies.

So, imagine my husband: youngish father, professional, Latino, dressed in his hip shirt and tie combo, sitting at a table of stay at home mommies in sweats and jeans, with infants and toddlers galore.

I asked him if he felt out of place….he said he didn’t particularly. He’s pretty laid back like that, though.

Last year, when I was still a work OUT of the home Mommy Diva, I started running the book fairs at Diva Jr.’s school. I also attended one of those handy-dandy orientation sessions. Even I felt out of place in my pant suit and heels among all those breastfeeding mommies…. This year, since I work at home, I’ll be ONE of them– I’ve already got my sweat pants picked out!

Back to the Hubby. He is highly involved in the children’s schooling. Once he commented that he loved to volunteer in the classroom, because laminating and cutting out things was so relaxing and effortless compared to crunching numbers.

I minored in Elementary Education for a while, and was thoroughly convinced of the value of the dad’s participation. I guess that value made it’s way over to my partner, too.

So, what’s the deal here, parents? Fathers- are you involved? If not, why not? What kinds of activities do you do? Any guesses as to why my husband was the only male at the orientation? Why sometimes he’s the only male at other events? Any feminists out there? Does this make you uncomfortable?

I like to think of myself as progressive, and we live in a somewhat progressive area, thanks to the University up the road, but you couldn’t tell!

What’s the deal people?

A bricked Nintendo wii is actually a Nintendo wii that does not do anything whatsoever. It includes the same efficiency as that of a brick, hence the name. There are some things you have to know before trying to mod your Wii system, otherwise you may be left with nothing but a white paper weight.
