I got words on my butt!

She’s Got Words on Her Bum! Oh no!

I have a confession. I wear words on my bum. Since I work from home, at my own computer, sometimes 14 hours per day, my “work suit” consists of whatever is most comfortable, and that often means tracksuits with words like JUICY or SKECHERS on the rear. (Juicy is more of a descriptor here, haha)

Diva Jr.’s school does not allow clothing with words on the bum. It’s part of the dress code.

Now, I fully support Diva Jr.’s school: I chose it, I researched it, and I like love it. Since I minored in education, including volunteer work and in-class practicums, I like to think I’m pretty well versed in the crap that teachers and administrators have to deal with day in and day out. One of those things is the constant second guessing of parents. Don’t get me wrong, parents have a right and responsibility to question, but holy lord, it can get a little tiring!

But, today, I’m second guessing…. Diva Jr. has a super cute Skechers Track Suit, too. It’s comfy, it’s warm, and honestly, it’s perfect for gym class days (freedom of movement, etc). But, she can’t wear it.

So, what do you think? Do these outfits sexualize little girls? Does words on the bum really say “look at my bum!”? Or, is making a big deal about words on the bum what is actually sexualizing it? Or perhaps, it’s the whole distraction thing… Would third graders really be distracted by this? Would the distraction come, from, say…sounding it out? Or, is it a respect issue? Does allowing Diva Jr. to wear these pants suggest to her that there is some kind of lack of respect for her own body?

Diva Jr. doesn’t associate her rear with…well…anything but bathroom jokes. So, she was truly puzzled today when I told her she couldn’t wear the fuzzy tracksuit because it had words on the bum. Her response was “So”….

So?

I hate pants that have writing on the ‘bum’. I’m not sure how answer your questions because I’ve seen mother’s allow their daughters to wear half shirts & mini skirts and I would choose to allow my own to wear bum pants anyday over an outfit I just described. I don’t view bum pants as sexual or implying anything sexual, they generally crack me up because it’s not MY bum everyone’s reading. Thank goodness. Do I think a third grader would be distracted by them? Absolutely not, in fact I could see a bunch of little girls giggling over it. Like they even understand the concept of sexual at that age…. or do they? (My daughter is 2 months old LOL)

In my opinion, clothing that has writing on the bum is fine for around the house, but in high school I think this would call more attention to the bum and have more guys looking in that direction. But for the 3rd graders, it would probably be a big laugh.

hey debbie- I think I agree about High School…those whole high school years are pretty charged, so I wouldn’t want to contribute to that!

I don’t think that the words on the butt are over sexualizing, but I do believe they say “look at my butt, see what it says.” What I consider over-sexualizing is clothing that shows too much skin like short shorts or show the belly. My issues are the age appropiateness of the clothing. I don’t feel my 10 year old should dress the same way her almost 18 year cousin does.

Also, how’s that 18 year old cousing dressing these days? I know when I went back to University as an adult, non traditional student, I was shocked….and I was only 25/26 at the time- not a prude by any means, but still wondering how these girls rode bikes around campus, got on and off the bus, and sat in tiered lecture halls without showing everyone their Victoria’s Secrets! ;)
