So, Now I’m My Mother

Posted by Allena Tapia on September 20th, 2007

Yeah, I was just trying to put the Beast down for nap and he kept saying “I’m thirsty, I’m thirsty.” (yeah, right)

I couldn’t help myself. I had to say it: “Nice to meet ya Thirsty, I’m Friday, let’s get Saturday and go for a Sundae.”

Did I really just say something so wholly uncool!!? Yup- that was me. I may as well just get in my minivan and go to the PTA meeting and soccer game now (Um, yeah, that would be funny, except that I pretty much just described my plans for the day)

Yesterday I told him I’d draw a happy face on a paper plate, and that would be his happy meal, and darn it, he was gonna like it! Yeah, my stepfather told me that one in 1983, thank you very much.

Another thing that I thought was a cop out when I was young was some of my mom’s dinners. (Sorry mom) How many times would she throw diced ham in a salad and call it good? Or, when we were young, I recall her insisting that peanut butter and jelly with milk was a balanced meal, because it had all the major food groups. Well, turns out, my kids happen to love that “dinner” and sometimes even request it. (Don’t worry- I’m still a Diva, cause sometimes I buy the sandwich from the Panera Bread store. So it’s still carry out, right?) These days I find myself scouring my memory looking for similar easy recipes from my childhood. Goulash anyone?

Anyway, my point is that someday we all have the horrible recognition of our parents in us. . .and with that comes a whole heck of a lot of understanding, doesn’t it? With every year that goes by, and every birthday my kids have, I “get” my mom more and more. Now, if someone could just explain my kids to me, I think I’ll be all set.

Have you seen your mom in the mirror? What words come out of your mouth that take you waaaaay back?

Every once in a while I serve chips and salsa for dinner. I did that tonight, actually. And you know what? I think it’s well balanced. Salsa is just diced vegetables, the chips are made of corn, and they drink tons of milk throughout the meal since it’s so spicy, and there’s your protein. Viola.

I {heart} this dinner, L. !!
